Student Training in Occupant Protection

Region 6 ESC, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), will provide educational classes to youth, adults, and caregivers in the service area regarding the importance of proper use of safety restraints in vehicles. These classes will be presented by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) and specialists with knowledge in occupant protection. Proper use of safety belts and child safety restraints will be discussed and hands-on activities will be used to demonstrate their importance. The CPSTs will also provide Child Safety Seat Check-Up Events for classroom workshop locations upon request. At the Check-Up Event, participants will receive one-on-one, hands-on instruction from a CPST on the proper safety restraint for their child(ren) and how to properly install the safety restraint(s) in their vehicle.

When installed correctly, car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers.
